Request an AppointmentWhat Is a Vertebral Compression Fracture?
A compression fracture happens when a vertebra, one of the bones of the spine, cracks and collapses. These fractures are most often caused by osteoporosis, which weakens bones so much that even a cough, sneeze, or minor fall can cause a break. They can also result from trauma or tumors. Compression fractures may cause sudden, severe back pain, loss of height, and a forward-hunched posture.
How Kyphoplasty Works
During kyphoplasty, your provider uses X-ray guidance to insert a narrow tube into the fractured vertebra through a small incision in the back. A tiny balloon is passed through the tube and gently inflated to raise the collapsed bone and create a space inside it. The balloon is then removed, and the space is filled with bone cement that hardens within minutes, stabilizing the fracture.
The procedure typically takes about an hour per treated vertebra and is performed with local anesthesia and sedation. Most patients go home the same day.
Benefits of Kyphoplasty
- Rapid pain relief, often within days
- Stabilization of the fractured vertebra
- Partial restoration of lost height in the vertebra
- Improved posture and mobility
- Reduced need for pain medication and prolonged bed rest
Who Is a Candidate?
Kyphoplasty is best for patients with painful compression fractures that have not healed with rest, bracing, and medication, ideally treated within a few months of the injury. Your provider will review imaging to confirm the fracture and its age. A similar procedure, vertebroplasty, injects cement without using a balloon and may be recommended in some cases.
Because many fractures are linked to bone loss, we also encourage patients to work with their primary care doctor on bone health. Explore our lower back pain treatment options.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kyphoplasty
How quickly does kyphoplasty relieve pain?
Many patients notice significant pain relief within a few days, and some feel better almost immediately.
What is the difference between kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty?
Kyphoplasty uses a balloon to create space and restore height before cement is added, while vertebroplasty injects cement directly into the fractured bone.
Is kyphoplasty surgery?
It is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure performed through a small incision with image guidance.
How long is recovery?
Most patients walk the same day and return to light activity within a few days.
What causes compression fractures?
Osteoporosis is the most common cause, but trauma and tumors can also weaken and fracture vertebrae.
Can more than one vertebra be treated?
Yes. Multiple fractured vertebrae can be treated, sometimes during the same procedure.
